A work permit is a government issued document which provides a foreign worker the authority to work in Canada legally. Two types of work permits issued to foreign workers are:
Open work permit
This type of work permit allows candidates to work in Canada without restrictions (exceptions apply). This type of permit does not require a Labour Market Impact Analysis (LMIA).
Employer specific work permit
With this work permit, a foreign can work for a specific employer for a said duration at a mentioned location. This type of permit is often called a closed-work-permit and involves a positive LMIA for the business and the employer, subject to a job-offer from the employer. To be eligible for a job offer, the foreign worker needs to fulfil various criteria, some of which include proving one’s intent and finances, work-permit compliance, police clearance and medical exam.
A foreign worker may be able to apply for a work permit from within or outside of Canada. Assessments can be made and processed accordingly.
